Frequently Asked Questions

With so many insulations on the market, people have many questions into what will be most suitable for their project. Icynene is a modern and efficient insulation which not many people have heard of since it’s arrival in Europe. It has had outstanding success in North America and it’s country of origin, Canada whilst achieving a number of globally recognised certifications for performance and durability.

We have covered some of the most common questions that people ask:

What is Spray Foam Insulation?

Icynene is a form of Spray Foam Insulation modernized for the energy efficient market. With over 30 years of development and over 300,000 residential applications, it provides an air barrier material that seals walls, floors and ceiling cavities against air movement. It can be applied over existing components in your home including plumbing and electrical fixtures without causing any issues in regards to building regulations and safety.

Where can it be applied?
Icynene is certified to be applied to roofs, crawl spaces, floors, ceilings and cavity walls. It has also been known to insulate vans and shipping containers.
How much does it cost?

Icynene prices can vary, but we had this feedback from a customer regarding Icynene prices.

‘Prime Energy Group insulated my house this year. Yeah, the Icynene was more expensive than fibreglass but since my additional cost per month to go with foam was only £30 a month. I am saving around £75 a month on my energy bills compared to if I had gone the way of that itchy fibreglass. I’m no math genius but that savings per month is more than it costs me to add the spray foam so it’s a WIN WIN.’

Will it cause timber rot?

100% open cell creates an air tight barrier but allows moisture through to create an even temperature.

Will it make my house hot in summer?
No, by creating a breathable air barrier Icynene will keep your home cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter. This benefits the home-owner all year round.
Will rats eat it?
No, Icynene does not act as a food source for insects, pests, rodents or airborne animals. However traditional insulation materials such as Fibreglass act as perfect nesting spots for animals due to their nest-like structure. Fibreglass insulation traditionally lays on the floor rather than the roof which means it is perfect for pests to leave faeces or waste around your home causing the build-up of bacteria.
Is it fire proof?
Icynene Classic Plus “O” is a class 0 fire rated spray foam insulation that has also achieved a best in class surface spread of flame of class 1 ( test range class 1 best to class 4 worst). Utilising a special intumescent coating Icynene has achieved certification to BS EN 476 Part 6 & 7 in addition to achieving Class 0 in accordance with approved Documents B “Fire Safety” To the Building Regulations 2000
How long does it take to install?
The majority of Icynene homeowners installs can be completed within a day, however bigger projects such as commercial installs can take longer. Your insulation surveyor can give you an accurate representation of what time-scales you can expect.
